About Me
Sounds-Write is an SSP approach based on the science of reading and designed by teachers, for teachers.
Since 2003, we have been providing our high-quality professional development programme to empower education professionals to do one of the most important jobs: teach children to read and write.
John Walker is the director of Sounds-Write and one of the co-authors of the programme. John has been a qualified teacher, university lecturer and teacher trainer for over thirty years, teaching English language and literature in many different countries and settings. He is a graduate of the University of Sussex and holds master degrees from the Universities of Sussex and Warwick. He is qualified in the teaching of English as a foreign language and holds an advanced certificate in English language teaching from the University of Edinburgh. He was an associate lecturer for the Open University for many years, teaching socio-linguistics, Children’s Literature, and Early Years courses
He trains practitioners in Sounds-Write and promotes the Sounds-Write programme in schools and other educational institutions across the world. John is also an enthusiastic edu-blogger, who posts regularly on all aspects of literacy teaching on his blog, theliteracyblog.com. He often speaks at ResearchEd, the education conference, and was recently a member of and 'reading expert' on the English Hubs Council at the Department for Education in the UK.
My Track Record
We have been training teachers, teaching assistants, educational psychologists and speech therapists since 2003. In 2011 the DfE recognised Sounds-Write as an approved phonics provider.
Our online courses are available to professionals throughout the world, including teachers from the UK, Australia, North America, Ireland, and New Zealand, as well as teachers from a host of international schools.
Support I Can Offer
Sounds-Write is able to provide training for teachers, teaching assistants and professionals working in SEN in teaching students to read and spell through our face-to-face and online courses.
We are also able to extend our training through Key Stage 2 and into Key Stage 3 through our Years 3 to 6 course, which further extends teachers' knowledge of phonics, morphology, etymology and, importantly, building vocabulary.
